Water softening is understood as the process of reducing the concentration of calcium and magnesium cations that cause water hardness.
There are a number of softening methods (reagent, ion exchange (cationic), dialysis, thermal), the choice of which is determined by the water quality, the required softening depth and technical and economic considerations.
Water softening methods:
  • thermal - the water is heated to a temperature above 1000C, while the carbonate and non-carbonate hardness is removed;
  • reagent - chemicals are added to the water that bind calcium and magnesium ions into poorly soluble compounds;
  • ion exchange - softened water is passed through cationic filters;
  • dialysis - the source water is filtered through a semipermeable membrane.
